If you don’t plan for a weekend trip right, you could end up in a mess. To make your trip as stress-free as possible, you need to consider many factors. It would be a shame to forget your toothbrush, not pack enough underwear, or misplace your socks and important documents.
I can only imagine what that would be like… Whether it’s a three-day getaway or a longer vacation, it’s better to be prepared than to be unprepared.
What’s in this Weekend Packing Guide?
You realize last minute that you’re leaving for your weekend getaway tomorrow – so it’s time to pack! The following tips will help you pack better before you grab everything in your closet. Packing a list of the essentials is a good idea if you follow these four tips.
What About Packing Cubes?
When I got my new luggage from Level8 Cases, I got the 4 Piece Packing Cubes set, and I love them. I love these Veken packing cubes in my favorite color (blog) if you’re looking for alternatives. Amazon has a set of Basics packing cubes that you might like.
Pick the Right Bag:
There are a couple of factors to consider when choosing the right bag for any trip:
- Your trip’s length (in this case, just a weekend!)
- What mode of transportation are you taking? Are you flying, taking the train, or driving?
- The amount of stuff you pack (which I will explain in this post)
During California getaways, I like to pack my valise (duffel bag) because it’s easy to carry and looks great. My husband and I invested in a rolling carry-on suitcase for our fifth anniversary; I use it whenever I travel by air since I’m so tired of carrying my things on my back.
In addition, I upgraded two years later to the Pro Carry-On with Laptop Pocket at Level8 Cases. This laptop pocket allows me to keep everything in one bag, as well as use a smaller personal item.

Pack Light & Pack Layers:
My travel philosophy is to pack light and pack layers. Life is too short to wait at baggage claim. Pack extra layers if you have the space! These two tips will help you pack for a weekend getaway so you have everything you need for every occasion.
Whether you’re traveling internationally or closer to home, this advice applies no matter when you’re traveling. You should keep these two philosophies in mind as you read the rest of this post – it’s how I’ve compiled this weekend’s packing list.
Use shoe bags:
Separate your shoes from your other belongings by packing them in a separate travel shoe bag. Yes, your shoes deserve their own bag because they are so special. You can fit one large pair of men’s shoes or two medium pairs of women’s shoes in this travel shoe bag.
Important Documents:
Remember to pack at least two credit cards, your passport, and any tickets you’ll need for your trip. (One to be used regularly, one as an emergency card.)
Electronics, Cords & Plugs:
It’s always a must for me to bring my computer, my phone, my Apple Watch, and the necessary cords. My iPad and charging cord are sometimes with me as well. There are still so many places where you have to plug in to listen to music, so I always bring both my Airpods and corded headphones!
Undergarments & Pair of Pajamas:
When I travel for more than 10 days, I pack half as many pairs of underwear as I’m traveling for (so 7 pairs for a 14-day trip) and hand-wash them halfway. As well as one or two bras, I always bring. I often wear my workout clothes as pajamas, depending on my travel plans. Also, I always bring an eye mask because it ensures a good night’s sleep wherever I am.
